Reds Urged to Target Brewers’ Big Bat in Offseason Trade Buzz

Will the Brewers Trade Rhys Hoskins This Offseason?

The Milwaukee Brewers have already made waves this offseason by trading All-Star closer Devin Williams, but could there be another blockbuster move on the horizon? First baseman Rhys Hoskins has become the center of speculation following his decision to pick up his $18 million option for the 2025 season. With a mutual option for 2026 also in play, Hoskins’ future in Milwaukee remains uncertain.

Hoskins delivered a solid season for the Brewers in 2024, hitting 26 home runs and driving in 82 runs. However, his $18 million salary has raised questions about whether the Brewers might look to move him in an effort to reallocate resources. If Hoskins were to be placed on the trade block, there’s already buzz about potential landing spots—one of which could be the division rival Cincinnati Reds.

A Logical Fit in Cincinnati?

FanSided’s Jacob Mountz recently floated the Reds as a possible destination for Hoskins. Cincinnati’s struggles at first base and designated hitter were glaring last season. Reds first basemen collectively hit just .224 with a .269 OBP and managed only 18 home runs, while their DH production was even worse at .203/.264 with 16 home runs.

Mountz argued that Hoskins could be the solution for both spots:

“If the Reds are going to contend soon, they will likely need to make a change to at least one of those positions. Last season, the Reds didn’t have a dedicated DH. This was a clear part of the problem. While they may have some options, there might not be a better option than what a division rival is potentially selling.”

He also noted that despite a slightly down year, Hoskins still draws walks at a high rate and barrels the ball effectively, leaving room for optimism about a bounce-back season if injuries are no longer a factor.

Brewers’ Dilemma: Keep or Trade?

Trading Hoskins within the division would undoubtedly raise eyebrows, but the Brewers may find themselves at a crossroads. On one hand, Hoskins provides much-needed pop in the lineup and could be a key piece for a team looking to remain competitive. On the other hand, his $18 million salary might be better spent elsewhere if Milwaukee feels confident in younger or cheaper internal options.

Additionally, trading Hoskins now could net the Brewers valuable assets to help reshape their roster. The Reds, with their need for a proven bat and aspirations to contend, could present an intriguing trade partner. However, moving a player of Hoskins’ caliber to a division rival always carries risks.

What’s Next?

For now, Hoskins remains a Brewer, and the team hasn’t made any official moves to shop him. However, with spring training fast approaching, Milwaukee’s front office will need to decide whether to stick with their veteran slugger or explore the trade market.

If Hoskins does hit the block, Cincinnati—or another team in need of a power bat—will undoubtedly come calling. Whether the Brewers answer remains to be seen. One thing is certain: the offseason in Milwaukee might not be over just yet.
