Pittsburgh Pirates Acquire Brett De Geus from Toronto Blue Jays

The Pittsburgh Pirates made a move to bolster their bullpen on Wednesday afternoon, acquiring right-handed pitcher Brett De Geus from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for cash considerations.

At 27 years old, De Geus brings MLB experience with 60 appearances under his belt, holding a 3-4 career record with a 7.48 ERA over 61 ⅓ innings. His role has been primarily in relief, making all of his major-league outings as a reliever.

De Geus spent much of the 2023 season bouncing between three teams—Toronto, Seattle Mariners, and Miami Marlins—posting a combined 7.15 ERA in 13 appearances. His most extended MLB stint came in 2021, when he pitched for the Texas Rangers and Arizona Diamondbacks, finishing with a 3-2 record and a 7.56 ERA in 50 innings.

Statcast highlights that De Geus primarily leans on a sinker (45%), knuckle curve (28%), cutter (21%), and splitter (5%) as part of his pitching arsenal.

In 2024, De Geus spent time at the Triple-A level, primarily with the Tacoma Rainiers, recording a 0-4 record and a 5.31 ERA across 39 innings.

Drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2017 (33rd round, 1,000 overall), De Geus aims to find a consistent role with the Pirates as he looks to establish himself in the MLB.
