Nightengale shared the latest on X, writing, “It’s the Cubs as closer or just late-inning reliever for the Astros for Ryan Pressly. It’s his choice. Tigers are out.”
The Cubs’ Pursuit of a Dominant Closer
For the Cubs, landing Pressly would solidify a bullpen that could use an elite arm to close out games. Pressly, who racked up 64 saves across two seasons before the arrival of Josh Hader in Houston, is still one of the best late-inning options in baseball. While he transitioned to a setup role with Hader’s dominance taking over, Pressly’s pedigree as a reliable closer makes him a top target for Chicago.

If Pressly opts to stay in Houston, the Cubs have a contingency plan. FanSided’s Michael Brakebill suggested Chicago could turn to veteran reliever David Robertson, who is no stranger to Wrigley Field. Robertson served as the Cubs’ closer during the 2022 season, posting a stellar 2.23 ERA before being traded to the Phillies.
“In the event that Pressly decides to stay in Houston, the Cubs will likely pivot to David Robertson, who the team has had a working relationship with for some time,” Brakebill wrote. “Robertson may be 39 years old now, but still owns a 2.82 ERA over the last three seasons combined.”
Though Robertson is nearing 40, his consistency over the last few seasons makes him a viable alternative if the Cubs miss out on Pressly.

For the Astros, retaining Pressly in a late-inning role would further bolster one of the league’s top bullpens. While Hader’s presence shifted Pressly out of the closer role, his experience and ability to handle high-leverage situations make him an integral part of Houston’s bullpen depth.
