Bruins News & Rumors: Trade Chatter, Injury Updates & More

In the most recent update of Boston Bruins News & Rumors, the team has garnered attention as a notable contender in the Chris Tanev sweepstakes. Additionally, reports suggest that the Original Six club is actively exploring the trade market in search of a particular player type. Furthermore, injury updates for key players on the Bruins’ roster have been released. Delve into all these updates and more in today’s (Jan. 12) edition of the Bruins News & Rumors column.

The Boston Bruins have been identified as a team to keep an eye on in the pursuit of Chris Tanev.

The Calgary Flames are emerging as a prominent team to monitor leading up to the deadline this season, primarily due to their possession of multiple key pending unrestricted free agents (UFAs). Chris Tanev is included in this group, drawing significant attention as a right-shot shutdown defenseman accustomed to playing substantial minutes in the top four. In a recent article for Daily Faceoff, Matt Larkin has highlighted the Boston Bruins as a team to keep an eye on in the Tanev sweepstakes. Larkin underscores the Bruins’ defensive challenges stemming from injuries, suggesting they might seek to bolster their blue line with a right-shot defenseman like Tanev before the trade deadline. Acquiring a seasoned and reliable defenseman like Tanev could bring considerable advantages to the Bruins. Should the trade materialize, Tanev would offer another viable option for the Bruins’ top four on the right side and significantly contribute to their penalty kill.

Nevertheless, as noted by Larkin in his analysis, orchestrating a trade for Tanev could pose challenges for the Bruins, given their lack of a first-round pick this season and a somewhat limited prospect pool.

The Boston Bruins are actively Scouting for middle-six forward options.

Following the retirements of Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci in the previous offseason, there has been a general anticipation that the Boston Bruins would prioritize acquiring a top-six center before the trade deadline. While securing a top-six center remains a focal point, the Bruins are also exploring alternative avenues. According to Emily Kaplan of ESPN, the Bruins are actively surveying the trade market for middle-six forwards. As the current trade market unfolds, the Bruins find themselves with several potential options fitting this criterion, including players such as Frank Vatrano (Anaheim Ducks), Sean Monahan (Montreal Canadiens), Anthony Duclair (San Jose Sharks), Morgan Frost (Philadelphia Flyers), and Adam Henrique (Ducks).

Bruins Injury Updates

The Bruins have been significantly affected by recent injuries, and noteworthy updates were provided on January 11. Defenseman Brandon Carlo was retroactively placed on injured reserve (IR) from January 8. Sidelined due to an upper-body injury incurred during the game against the Colorado Avalanche, Carlo is expected to remain out until the Bruins’ January 18 match against, coincidentally, the Avalanche. Head coach Jim Montgomery also offered updates on goaltender Linus Ullmark and forward Matt Poitras, stating that both are considered day-to-day. Both players departed early from the Bruins’ recent game against the Arizona Coyotes due to separate injuries. Ullmark’s injury raised concerns as he required assistance from teammates while leaving the ice. Fortunately, neither player sustained severe injuries, and their return to action is anticipated in the near future.

Ex-Bruin Foligno Inks Contract Extension with the Chicago Blackhawks.

Former Bruins player Nick Foligno has secured a two-year, $9 million contract extension with the Chicago Blackhawks. Following the offseason trade of the veteran winger’s unrestricted free agent rights to the Blackhawks, he swiftly joined the team. Since then, Foligno, affectionately known as ‘Uncle Nick,’ has proven to be a valuable addition to Chicago. With eight goals and 17 points in 39 games this season, he has made a notable impact offensively, but his greatest contribution lies in his exceptional leadership. Serving as a mentor to young talents like Connor Bedard, Foligno has become an influential figure in the Blackhawks’ lineup. With this new contract, he is poised to remain a crucial part of the team’s rebuilding efforts, and there is even speculation that he could potentially assume a leadership role, possibly donning the captain’s ‘C’ in the near future.
