Phillies Add Bullpen Depth, Claim Carlos Hernández Off Waivers

Opening Day is just around the corner, but the Philadelphia Phillies are still fine-tuning their roster. In a last-minute move to bolster their bullpen, the Phillies claimed right-handed reliever Carlos Hernández off waivers from the Kansas City Royals on Sunday.
The decision by Kansas City to part ways with Hernández raised eyebrows, given his effectiveness last season. In 30 innings across 27 appearances, he posted career-best marks with a 3.30 ERA and a 3.50 FIP. However, a rough spring training—where he logged a 6.97 ERA in eight appearances—seemingly cost him a roster spot.
Why the Phillies Took a Chance
Despite some inconsistency throughout his career, Hernández showed signs of turning a corner in 2024. The 28-year-old has a career record of 7-19 with a 4.95 ERA, 1.45 WHIP, and a 4.45 FIP over 256 1/3 innings, but last year’s resurgence made him an intriguing waiver-wire addition for Philadelphia.
Pitching depth is always a priority, and Hernández brings a power arm to the Phillies’ bullpen. His fastball averaged 97.9 mph last season, making him a potential weapon in late-inning situations. While his command remains a concern (career 4.4 BB/9), and he doesn’t generate a ton of strikeouts (career 7.9 K/9), his late-season performance in 2024 suggests he can be a valuable asset. In September, as the Royals competed for a playoff spot, Hernández posted a 2.38 ERA over 10 appearances, limiting opponents to a .180 batting average.
Roster news: The #Royals placed Nick Pratto, Nelson Velázquez and Carlos Hernández on outright waivers, according to a source, removing them from the 40-man roster.

Low-Risk, High-Upside Move for Philadelphia
The Phillies don’t necessarily know which version of Hernández they’re getting, but the potential for another strong season is worth the gamble. If he replicates his 2024 form, he could carve out a key bullpen role. If not, Philadelphia can easily pivot to other options without much risk.
With Opening Day fast approaching, the Phillies’ front office continues to make moves to solidify the roster. Hernández’s ability to harness his high-velocity arsenal could determine whether he becomes a mainstay in the bullpen or a short-term experiment.
