Phillies Designate Kody Clemens for Assignment to Make Room for Returning Weston Wilson
Phillies DFA Kody Clemens as Cristopher Sánchez Avoids MRI, Weston Wilson Returns
The Philadelphia Phillies made a roster shake-up on Wednesday, designating Kody Clemens for assignment to clear space for utilityman Weston Wilson, who was activated from the 10-day injured list.
Clemens, the 28-year-old son of seven-time Cy Young winner Roger Clemens, saw limited action early this season. He went hitless in six at-bats over seven games, primarily appearing as a pinch-hitter. Since arriving from Detroit in a January 2023 trade, Clemens has hit .220 with nine home runs and 31 RBIs in 97 games for Philadelphia. Overall, he holds a .197 batting average with 14 homers and 58 RBIs across four MLB seasons.
Wilson, returning from a left oblique strain that sidelined him since spring training, earned his call-up following a brief rehab stint between Class A Clearwater and Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Though he hit just .158 with two RBIs in those 10 games, the Phillies are betting on his positional versatility to add depth.
Meanwhile, Philadelphia received a positive update on left-hander Cristopher Sánchez, who exited Tuesday’s 5-1 loss to the Mets after experiencing tightness in his left forearm. Manager Rob Thomson reported that Sánchez felt normal on Wednesday and won’t need an MRI. With Thursday’s off day on the schedule, the team may opt to give Sánchez additional rest and reshuffle the rotation if needed.
“He actually wanted to play catch today,” Thomson said. “Last I had heard, they just want him just to rest today.”
The Phillies also continue to monitor the progress of Ranger Suárez. The left-hander, who’s been sidelined since spring training with lower back stiffness, is slated to make a fourth rehab start Sunday for Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Suárez threw 59 pitches in his latest outing and could be activated soon, depending on how Sánchez recovers.
With key arms approaching full health and roster decisions tightening, the Phillies are juggling short-term depth with long-term durability as the season picks up steam.
