The Cincinnati Reds remain locked in a tight postseason race with the New York Mets, both fighting for the final National League wild-card spot. While the Mets boast Juan Soto and one of baseball’s most expensive rosters, the Reds are leaning heavily on young star Elly De La Cruz despite having one of the league’s smallest payrolls.
De La Cruz has been central to Cincinnati’s offense all season, but questions have lingered about his speed and stolen bases after a reported quad injury. He swiped 67 bags last year but is projected for around 40 this season, with sprint speed slightly down. Still, the 22-year-old hasn’t missed a game and put concerns to rest after Tuesday’s win over the Los Angeles Angels, saying simply: “We’re getting better.”
On the field, he backed up that statement—scoring from first base twice, including on a bloop double few others would’ve attempted. With the Reds’ playoff hopes riding largely on his performance, De La Cruz’s return to peak explosiveness could be the deciding factor in their postseason push.
