Cincinnati Reds sold Daniel Duarte to Texas Rangers

Right-handed reliever Daniel Duarte was sent to Texas by the Cincinnati Reds in an afternoon trade with the Texas Rangers. When Cincinnati needed a spot on the 40-man roster and officially signed lefty reliever Brent Suter last week, they designated Duarte for assignment. The Rangers offered Cincinnati a trade offer because they were unwilling to takes. a chance with Cincinnati on the waiver wire. In exchange for Duarte, the Reds will receive an amount of money that is not yet known.

Duarte is rejoining the team that signed him when he was still in Mexico in 2013. Before the Kansas City Royals selected him in the Rule 5 minor league phase in December 2017, he spent four seasons with them. He would be let go at the end of the 2019 campaign.

Duarte would eventually make it to the major leagues in April 2022 after signing with the Reds in 2020 and again in 2021. However, he was placed on the disabled list two weeks later due to an injury, and he missed the following four months until making a comeback at the end of the season. That season, he would throw in just three major league contests.

He started the previous season in the minor leagues with Triple-A Louisville, but in the middle of June, he returned to Cincinnati, where he finished the season with 31.2 innings pitched and a 3.69 ERA in 31 games. Throughout the season, Duarte entered the game seven times with a runner on base, but he didn’t let any of those runners cross the plate to score.

Throughout his first 21 games with Cincinnati, he had poor control, walking 10 batters and striking out 18 in 20.2 innings through August. However, once September arrived, he lost control, walking ten hitters in 11.0 innings while only striking out five to end his 2023 campaign with the Reds.
