Sherrone Moore has been promoted to the position of head coach at Michigan.

Michigan wasted no time in filling the head coaching vacancy left by Jim Harbaugh, as they announced the promotion of offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Sherrone Moore just two days after Harbaugh’s departure. Even before Jim Harbaugh’s move to the Los Angeles Chargers, he had been endorsing Moore as his potential successor at Michigan. Harbaugh, who served two suspensions during the 2023 season, highlighted Moore’s readiness for the head coaching role, citing his proven track record as interim coach with a 4-0 record, including victories against Penn State and Ohio State.

Michigan concluded a remarkable 15-0 season, clinching the College Football Playoff national championship against Washington. With Harbaugh’s departure after an 86-25 record as Michigan’s head coach, the responsibility now falls on Moore, a role he has eagerly anticipated. Moore expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I have been preparing my entire coaching career for this opportunity, and I can’t think of a better place to be head coach than at the University of Michigan.”

Athletic director Warde Manuel praised Moore’s leadership during his interim head-coaching stints in the past season, emphasizing his dynamic and competitive qualities. Moore, although never having been a head coach before, played a crucial role as co-offensive coordinator since his arrival in 2018, earning a spot as a finalist for the 2023 Broyles Award, recognizing the nation’s top assistant coach.

Moore, who played guard at Oklahoma, acknowledged the differences in responsibilities as a head coach, emphasizing the need for effective communication and decision-making. Despite not fitting the traditional “Michigan Man” mold, Moore expressed contentment in Ann Arbor and loyalty to the Wolverines, ultimately securing the head coaching position. The university and the football program look forward to Moore’s leadership, as he aims to continue the legacy of championship football at Michigan.
