Sherrone Moore, the newly appointed head football coach at Michigan, arrived at Michigan Stadium on November 25, 2023, before the game against Ohio State. Moore’s five-year contract, starting at $5.5 million annually, was officially signed on Friday.
According to the terms disclosed by a spokesperson from the athletic department to MLive, Moore will receive a 2 percent salary increase each year throughout the contract duration. Additionally, he is entitled to an annual $500,000 retention bonus for remaining at Michigan.
The contract is valid until January 31, 2029. Despite being in the lower half of Big Ten coaches’ salaries, as per the USA Today coaching salaries database, with Nebraska’s Matt Rhule and Maryland’s Mike Locksley ranking ninth and tenth at $5.5 million each in 2023, Moore has the opportunity for substantial bonuses based on Michigan’s performance.
Similar to his predecessor, Moore, aged 37, can earn significant bonuses for the team’s success on the field and in academics. Achieving a return to the Big Ten title game would result in a $250,000 bonus, and securing a conference title would yield an additional $500,000.
Should Michigan make a return to the College Football Playoff, Sherrone Moore stands to earn various on-field bonuses. These include $200,000 for a first-round appearance or bye, an additional $300,000 for advancing to the quarterfinals, an additional $500,000 for reaching the semifinals, $750,000 for making it to the championship, and an extra $1 million for securing a national title.
In total, Moore has the potential to receive $3.5 million in on-field bonus payments. Additionally, he is eligible for an academic bonus of up to $150,000 per year if Michigan achieves a team-wide NCAA academic progress rate (APR) score of 960 or higher.
In the event that Michigan decides to terminate Moore’s contract without cause before its conclusion, the school would be obligated to pay him 75 percent of the remaining salary. Conversely, if Moore chooses to leave, he would owe Michigan $5 million if he departs in 2024, $4 million in 2025, $3 million in 2026, $2 million in 2027, and $1 million in 2028.
Moore, who has limited head-coaching experience with only four games in an interim role, is taking over from the departing Jim Harbaugh. Harbaugh recently signed a five-year deal to become the head coach of the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers.
Jim Harbaugh had three years left on his five-year Michigan contract, which ensured him an annual salary of over $8 million. With performance bonuses factored in, Harbaugh’s earnings exceeded $10 million in each of the last two seasons.
Prior to his promotion, Sherrone Moore’s compensation as Michigan’s offensive coordinator for 2024 was set at $1.2 million.
