Unveiling Cleveland Guardians’ Roster Prospects for 2024 AL Central Battle

The Cleveland Guardians will once more depend on youthful talent to achieve success in 2024. Here are five prospects poised to make a significant impact for them this season.

The Cleveland Guardians will need to depend on a surge of fresh talent to be competitive in the AL Central in 2024. Here are some players who could step up if things go well. The team will be relying heavily on rookies to learn quickly once again.

Joey Cantillo

A starting rotation rarely makes it through a season without injuries. Fortunately, the Guardians still have a strong pipeline for pitching development. In the unlikely event of an injury, Joey Cantillo is likely the next pitcher in line. Cantillo, 24, moved up to Triple-A Columbus in 2023 after pitching in 20 games (18 starts) with a 4.64 ERA and 111 strikeouts in 95 innings. Over six minor league seasons, Cantillo has maintained a 2.94 ERA. Once considered a soft-tosser, he has transformed into a power pitcher with a fastball reaching the low-to-mid 90s, along with a full arsenal of pitches including a cutter, changeup, and curveball. Cantillo is expected to bolster Cleveland’s rotation, providing depth to their primary strength.

Kyle Manzardo

Much has been said about Kyle Manzardo, the first baseman acquired in the Aaron Civale trade from the Tampa Bay Rays last summer. Although it’s unlikely he’ll start the season with the team, the 23-year-old is expected to join the Guardians soon. Manzardo is widely regarded as one of the top first base prospects, especially after an impressive performance in the Fall League where he posted a slash line of .272/.340/.565 with six home runs, seven doubles, and 19 RBI in 103 plate appearances. While Manzardo has shown inconsistency at times, scouts envision him becoming a significant power hitter in the middle of the lineup, a much-needed asset for the Guardians.

Brayan Rocchio

Though not strictly a “prospect” anymore, Brayan Rocchio is poised to see regular playing time in the majors in 2024, with a strong chance of winning the starting shortstop position, possibly even during spring training. Rocchio had a successful season in the Venezuelan Winter League, showcasing his defensive skills at shortstop while hitting .377/.457/.541 with a home run, seven doubles, eight RBI, and two stolen bases. His performance helped lead his team to the LVBP title. Rocchio is expected to make a significant impact for Cleveland.

Jonathan Rodriguez

The outfield remains a concern for the Guardians, but Jonathan Rodriguez, 24, offers some hope. With 29 home runs across Double-A and Triple-A last season, Rodriguez is a promising candidate. His addition to the 40-man roster and strong showing in Columbus (.280/.376/.560 with 11 home runs in 202 plate appearances) indicate the organization’s confidence in his power translating to the majors. Although comparisons to Oscar Gonzalez exist, Rodriguez is praised for his superior swing choices, providing optimism for the team.

Deyvison De Los Santos

De Los Santos, a Rule 5 pick, may or may not start the season with the Guardians, potentially returning to the Arizona Diamondbacks if not retained on the 26-man roster. However, his presence alone could make a significant impact. The 20-year-old showcased his power with 20 home runs in Double-A last season, despite facing challenges. The Guardians have enough faith in him to include him in spring training, indicating their belief in his potential.
