Oregon Lands Commitment from Cornerback Jabbar Muhammad: Transitioning from Washington to Ducks in 2024

The Ducks created a significant impact in the transfer portal over the weekend with the acquisition of one of the top defensive backs accessible.

Over the weekend, Oregon secured a commitment from Jabbar Muhammad, a cornerback hailing from Washington. In 2024, Muhammad will transition from donning the Husky purple and gold to sporting the Ducks’ green and yellow.

Muhammad finalized his decision while on campus in Eugene and elaborated on his commitment with Ducks Digest.

So, why did the 2023 All-Pac-12 cornerback opt for Oregon?

“For the final year of my collegiate career, I believe it’s the optimal fit for me,” he expressed. “It offers stability, and I’ll have the opportunity to play under a defensive-minded head coach, which is a new experience for me. The intricacies of the defensive scheme will position me to make impactful plays.”

“Oregon stood out to me. I was aware of the market presence they have up there. They prioritize marketing their players and ensure visibility. This positions me well for the upcoming draft and playing at the professional level.”

Muhammad selected Oregon over other top contenders such as Texas and Alabama. Despite visiting each school, he felt drawn to Eugene due to the persistent efforts of the coaching staff.

“Throughout the entire process, Coach Lanning, Coach Tosh, Coach Hamp, they were in constant communication, outlining their plans for me. I always had a sense of where I wanted to be.”

Having experienced two college programs previously (Oklahoma State and Washington), Muhammad approached his recruitment differently from the typical high school recruit.

“Upon visiting Oregon, I was immediately sold,” he reflected. “As someone who’s not your typical 18-year-old recruit, I scrutinize different aspects. I evaluate the scheme, our potential for contention, and other factors. When I saw what Oregon had to offer, I knew it was the right fit.”

While the Oregon coaching staff primarily intends to deploy him at cornerback, Muhammad’s versatility allows him to contribute to the defense in various capacities.

“They plan to utilize me flexibly, positioning me to make plays across the back end. While my primary role will be at cornerback, I’ll also feature in nickel packages as needed.”

Oregon’s program met all of Muhammad’s criteria, from the defensive scheme to the community in Eugene.

“The facilities are top-notch, unmatched by others. Eugene, being a small city, resonates with me as a laid-back individual. I’m someone who primarily focuses on football and appreciates the relaxed atmosphere.”

Dan Lanning and his coaching team left a lasting impression on Muhammad and his family, fostering a sense of belonging.

“The entire staff welcomed us with open arms, treating us like family. It felt reminiscent of being back in the South. Coach Lanning, hailing from Georgia, brought that warmth and hospitality. We felt right at home.”

Muhammad’s signature celebration has gained traction within the Oregon program and its fanbase, a reception he appreciates wholeheartedly.

“It’s incredible to see the recognition it’s receiving. I prayed for moments like these as a kid, and to see them materialize is truly a blessing. The staff and players embracing it with such enthusiasm speaks volumes about the camaraderie here, and I’m grateful to be a part of it.”

What can the Ducks expect from Muhammad on the defensive end in 2024?

“In terms of my playing style, I consider myself a savvy cornerback. I’m assertive when necessary, knowing when to seize opportunities and when to play patiently. I’m adaptable and possess a skill set that I believe is among the nation’s elite. I’m eager to contribute and make an impact.”

Muhammad concluded with a message to the fans.

“I’m eager to roll up my sleeves and get to work. These last few months of college are crucial before I aim for the next level. I’m committed to giving my all to this university, staying focused, and forming bonds with my teammates. Stay blessed, everyone.”
