Roosters recruit sibling of skilled halfback.

Reportedly, the Sydney Roosters have secured the services of rising star Tyson Walker, who is none other than the younger sibling of their current halfback, Sam Walker.

Hailing as one of Queensland’s most promising talents, Tyson made waves in the Under-16s Cyril Connell Cup last season. While presently excelling as a fullback in rugby union for IGS’s First XV, he showcases his skills in the halves in rugby league.

This acquisition presents intriguing possibilities: Tyson could either serve as a potential successor to James Tedesco in the fullback position or team up with his elder brother in the halves, potentially filling the spot alongside Luke Keary.

According to reports from News Corp, the Roosters have secured Tyson Walker on a two-year deal, plucking him from Ipswich as he advances through the NRL’s developmental pathways.

It’s been disclosed that the 16-year-old Walker underwent training with the Roosters over the summer but has since returned to Queensland to commence Year 11 at Ipswich Grammar School.

As per the report, there exists a partnership between the Ipswich Jets and Sydney Roosters concerning the young prodigy.

“Tyson is eager to pursue his rugby career, and with his brother already there, naturally, he has a strong desire to join Sam at the Roosters,” expressed his father, Ben Walker, to the publication.

“They would undoubtedly make a formidable duo.

“By mid-2025, Tyson will reach the age of 18, making 2026 a feasible timeframe for his NRL debut. Sam entered the NRL at 18, so it’s entirely plausible that Tyson could follow suit straight out of school.

“There’s certainly potential for both Tyson and Sam to feature as halves partners at the Roosters. It would be a fantastic sight to behold.”

Growing up surrounded by rugby league, Tyson, a prospective NRL player, has been immersed in the sport from a tender age. His father, Ben Walker, along with his uncles Shane Walker and Chris Walker, all made their mark in first-grade rugby league.

Ben amassed 135 NRL appearances, Shane played in 149 NRL matches, and Chris boasted 151 NRL games. Meanwhile, Tyson’s older brother, Sam, has already notched up 56 games for the Sydney Roosters since 2021 and has even earned selection in the extended squad for the Queensland Maroons.

When questioned about comparing his two sons, Ben Walker emphasized their distinctiveness as players.

“I avoid drawing comparisons between my kids,” remarked Walker.

“Attempting to compare anyone to Sam wouldn’t be fair because Sam is exceptional as a halfback. I’ve been involved in rugby league for a long time, and I haven’t seen a better young talent than Sam.

“No one matches Sam’s caliber as a young playmaker, but Tyson brings his own style to the game.

“He’s more likely to thrive as a fullback or five-eighth, possessing a sturdier physique compared to Sam. He takes after his uncle Chris in terms of physique and playing style, leaning more towards being a ball-runner.

“Tyson exhibits impressive skill and vision with the ball. Despite not getting much game time last year due to the limited duration of competitions like the Cyril Connell Cup and the GPS, his potential remains evident.

“In the long run, if he ends up playing alongside Sam at the Roosters, he’ll likely operate as a fullback or five-eighth, rather than in the halfback position.”
