Impressive Start: Will Howard’s Acclaim for Ohio State’s Talent and the Promise of Howard & Smith Duo

Howard described Smith as a "spectacle," citing the freshman receiver's physical prowess and dedication as proof.

Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Will Howard expressed his early admiration for the talent of his new team during his first media session with the Buckeyes on Tuesday. In addition to explaining his decision to bypass the 2024 NFL Draft, Howard took the opportunity to commend receiver Jeremiah Smith.

“He’s truly remarkable, a standout physically,” Howard remarked. “I’m eagerly anticipating seeing him perform on the field.”

Howard’s praise for Smith is backed by ample evidence. The freshman wideout was ranked as the top receiver in the Class of 2024 both in his native Florida and nationally. Furthermore, Smith held the distinction of being the top overall prospect in the nation, irrespective of position.

Following the conclusion of his fourth season at Kansas State, Howard entered the transfer portal, ultimately committing to the Buckeyes earlier this month.

Ohio State suffered a 14-3 defeat to the Missouri Tigers in the 2023 Goodyear Cotton Bowl on December 29. A contributing factor to the Buckeyes’ loss was their lack of experience at quarterback, as sophomore Devin Brown and freshman Lincoln Kienholz shared reps during the game.

With Howard’s addition, widely believed to secure the starting role for the upcoming season, Ohio State appears to have addressed its quarterback concerns. Howard will have the luxury of throwing to one of the nation’s most talented receiving corps, even without Smith. Nevertheless, the potential partnership of Howard & Smith could emerge as the premier duo in college football.
