Oregon Duck supporters have enjoyed a couple of remarkable offensive seasons, witnessing quarterback Bo Nix rejuvenate his career in Eugene and spearhead one of the nation’s top offenses since his transfer from Auburn.
In 2023, Nix showcased himself as one of the premier quarterbacks nationally, earning a finalist position for the Heisman Trophy. Consequently, he is now anticipated to be among the top quarterbacks chosen in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Looking ahead for the Ducks, the shift from Nix to incoming transfer Dillon Gabriel from Oklahoma raises questions. Although Gabriel boasts a successful five-year college football career, can he match the lofty expectations of Oregon fans accustomed to the excellence of the most accurate QB in college football history over the past two years?
I asked @DanRubenstein if he thinks Dillon Gabriel will be able to adequately fill Bo Nix's shoes in Eugene — a tall task for anyone.
It was a pretty simple answer for Dan.

This was a query posed to Dan Rubenstein, an Oregon alum and co-host of the Solid Verbal Podcast, during the latest episode of the Sco-ing Long Podcast.
“Dillon Gabriel is known for his accuracy and willingness to target deep,” Rubenstein remarked. “However, he lacks the arm strength of Bo Nix, and how the offense adapts to Gabriel’s strengths and weaknesses remains to be seen. While he’s eager to run when opportunities arise, he doesn’t push it unnecessarily.”
Gabriel finds himself in a favorable situation, surrounded by top-tier talent in the running back and wide receiver positions, with several key pieces returning to the offensive line from the impressive 2023 unit.
Given these circumstances, the stage is set for Gabriel to exceed the expectations of Oregon fans.
“I don’t anticipate him being required to carry a heavy load athletically,” Rubenstein stated. “Oregon’s offensive balance should alleviate much of the pressure on him. With the right play calls and continued solid performance from the offensive line, I believe his role will be relatively straightforward. He’s fully capable of leading this team to victory in the Big Ten and possibly the playoffs.”
