Update on Cleveland Guardians’ Pitcher James Karinchak’s Spring Training Status

Pitchers and catchers of the Cleveland Guardians are currently participating in spring training, but reliever James Karinchak has yet to begin throwing due to experiencing shoulder fatigue.

According to a report from MLB.com, Karinchak will follow a slower schedule compared to the rest of the pitchers and catchers who reported to camp on Feb. 13, owing to fatigue in his throwing shoulder. Initially, he will refrain from throwing for the first few days of workouts, with the team aiming for him to commence his throwing program shortly thereafter. (Last updated: Feb. 15)

While it’s not yet time to sound the alarm, this situation warrants close attention. Karinchak is a crucial asset in the Guardians’ bullpen, and his health is essential for the team’s success, particularly under the guidance of first-year manager Stephen Vogt.

Having debuted in the majors in 2019, the 28-year-old has consistently appeared in MLB games over the past five years. In 2021, he participated in 60 games, followed by 38 games in 2022, and 44 games last season. Throughout his career, he holds a record of 12-11 with a 3.10 ERA.

In the 2023 season, Karinchak posted a 2-5 record with a 3.23 ERA and serves as one of the set-up options for superstar closer Emmanuel Clase.

The Guardians, who finished third in the American League Central last season, are undergoing a transitional phase with Vogt succeeding longtime manager Terry Francona. Additionally, the team is integrating several young pitchers into prominent roles, including Tanner Bibbe and Logan Allen.

The Guardians will commence their season on March 28 against the Oakland Athletics.
