Broncos Head Coach Sean Payton captivated with boom-or-bust Michigan Quarterback.

Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy is generating buzz as a potential high-risk, high-reward prospect, drawing interest from Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton. According to Paul Allen, a longtime Minnesota Vikings broadcaster, Payton is reportedly “enamored” with McCarthy.

Allen’s source indicates that Payton’s interest in McCarthy stems from the quarterback’s attributes, including his pro-style offense background, strong arm, and mobility. While Payton sees potential in McCarthy, he acknowledges differences between McCarthy and former New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, noting that McCarthy is taller and not as accurate, though he moves more than Brees.

McCarthy’s evaluation among scouts varies widely. One AFC East scout compared McCarthy’s skill set to that of Cincinnati Bengals star Joe Burrow, suggesting high potential. However, another scout in the AFC South assigned McCarthy a third-round grade, indicating less certainty about his NFL prospects.

J.J. McCarthy played a pivotal role in Michigan’s recent national championship win, ending a 26-year drought. Despite not having eye-popping statistics, McCarthy’s contributions were instrumental. In 15 games, he completed 72.3% of his passes for 2,991 yards, 22 touchdowns, and four interceptions.

The Denver Broncos, holding the 12th overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, are reportedly considering McCarthy as a potential replacement for Russell Wilson, whom they are expected to release in March. However, questions remain about McCarthy’s readiness to start in the NFL, especially given Denver’s recent struggles and the team’s need for a franchise quarterback.

The Broncos’ offensive performance has been middling, ranking 20th in the league in points scored (21 PPG) last season, and the team has had seven straight losing seasons. With the NFL Scouting Combine approaching, Denver will likely explore other quarterback options to ensure they make an informed decision about their future at the position.
