The Toronto Blue Jays have made a declaration about their spring training opener and provided an injury update on a possible starter.
The Toronto Blue Jays have selected top prospect Ricky Tiedemann as the starting pitcher for their spring training opener against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Additionally, they have provided a positive update on Cavan Biggio’s shoulder, indicating that he may be a potential starter at second base. The team will commence their spring training schedule with Tiedemann on the mound, marking the beginning of what is expected to be his debut season in the major leagues.
Tiedemann, a 21-year-old left-hander, was limited to 44 innings over 15 starts last season due to shoulder and biceps injuries. Despite this, he concluded the 2023 season with an Arizona Fall League championship, earning the league’s pitcher of the year award.
Tiedemann is ranked as the organization’s top prospect and the 29th best prospect in all of baseball for the upcoming season. Although his injury history and age suggest he is unlikely to make the opening roster, the Blue Jays anticipate his debut sometime during the season.
