Cooper DeJean to Miss NFL Combine: Iowa Fans Disappointed

Unfortunately for Iowa fans, defensive back Cooper DeJean will not be taking part in the upcoming NFL combine. There was anticipation among fans, both from Iowa and prospective NFL followers, that DeJean would be fully prepared for the NFL combine at the end of February. However, it seems the unanimous All-American defensive back is still in the process of recuperating from a leg injury sustained late in the 2023 college football season, according to The Athletic’s NFL draft analyst Dane Brugler.

Brugler’s report comes as disappointing news. DeJean had the potential to make a significant impact at the combine, showcasing his exceptional athleticism and challenging any preconceived notions about his abilities. Despite the setback, those familiar with DeJean’s prowess on the field, both defensively and on special teams, recognize his elite athleticism and suitability for the NFL.

The silver lining for DeJean is the opportunity to focus on his recovery and prepare for workouts with NFL teams closer to the draft. While the combine serves as a platform to assess player athleticism and conduct interviews, DeJean’s performance on the field over the past two seasons speaks volumes about his capabilities.

During his time with the Hawkeyes, DeJean accumulated impressive statistics, including 120 tackles, 20 pass breakups, seven interceptions, and five tackles for loss. Standing at 6 feet 1 inch and weighing 203 pounds, he exhibited his versatility by returning three interceptions for touchdowns during the 2022 season and recording a 70-yard punt return touchdown against Michigan State in 2023.

As the 2024 NFL draft approaches, DeJean’s absence from the combine does not diminish the anticipation surrounding his potential contributions at the professional level. Fans and scouts alike eagerly await his next chapter in the NFL, set to unfold on Thursday, April 25, at Campus Martius Park and Hart Plaza in Detroit, Michigan.
