The New York Yankees have decided to sideline infielder Oswald Peraza for a period of six to eight weeks following an imaging scan that revealed a subscapularis strain in his right shoulder. This decision comes after Peraza experienced shoulder discomfort, leading to a 10-day absence from spring training. Despite returning to play in two games, he continued to experience pain, prompting the need for an MRI.
If Peraza undergoes the minimum six-week shutdown period, he could potentially resume baseball activities in mid-April. However, he would still require time to regain full playing fitness, including a rehabilitation assignment at a Yankees affiliate. Consequently, his return to the field in New York is unlikely before May.
Although the Yankees have a settled starting lineup for the upcoming season, with Anthony Volpe, Gleyber Torres, DJ LeMahieu, and Anthony Rizzo expected to start in the infield, Peraza’s versatility to play multiple positions would have made him a valuable backup. However, his batting performance at the Major League level has been inconsistent, with a .191 average in 157 plate appearances last season following a promising .306 average in a brief 2022 stint.
