Jim Harbaugh: Michigan football ‘in great hands’ under Sherrone Moore

Jim Harbaugh's Introductory Press Conference in Los Angeles: Reflection on his Departure from Michigan and the State of the Wolverines.

The Jim Harbaugh era commenced in Los Angeles on Thursday afternoon as the newly appointed head coach engaged with the media during his introductory press conference.

Throughout the hour-long session, Harbaugh addressed inquiries regarding his departure from Michigan. He confirmed that Ben Herbert would be joining him in Southern California, although the process of hiring coordinators, roles that U-M’s Jesse Minter and Jay Harbaugh are anticipated to assume, is still underway. Additionally, Harbaugh shared his thoughts on the current state of the Michigan football program.

Here are Harbaugh’s remarks concerning Michigan:

– On his decision to leave Michigan for the NFL after the 2023 college football season:
“My decision was driven by my love for Michigan but also my desire to return to the NFL. … I feel a sense of urgency to make the most of the time I have left and pursue another opportunity to achieve the ultimate goal: winning a Super Bowl. I’m grateful for this chance and ready to dive in.”

– On the state of Michigan football post-departure:
“Sherrone is the perfect choice for the job. No one else could fill those shoes — he’s the guy. And they made the right call. Michigan is in a fantastic position, ranked at the top, among the elite. I still consider myself part of both teams: the Chargers and the Michigan Wolverines, almost like one cohesive unit. It’s a great feeling. Just like when players move on from the university to the pros, there’s a natural transition. You see players like J.J. depart, but then you witness the next generation stepping up — players like Jayden Denegal, Alex Orji — they’re out there the next day, putting in the work, showing excitement. I’ve experienced that transition as a player when the quarterback ahead of me moved on. It’s the same for coaches.

“I’ve been in touch with Sherrone. He’s fired up right now, fully immersed in recruiting. And coaches like Jesse Minter — exceptional talents. We’re currently in the process of finalizing things. Regarding Ben Herbert — I can confirm he’s joining the Chargers. There was a symbolic passing of the torch to Justin Tress. We embraced right there in the blue ‘M,’ in the heart of the weight room. The program is in excellent hands. I’ll always be a devoted Wolverine.”

– On whether Michigan could have taken steps to retain him:
“Michigan was wonderful, as I mentioned. I hold deep affection for Michigan, but my aspiration to return to the NFL and tackle this new challenge is what I truly desired.”
