Giants Could Make a Bold Decision with Leading Receiver Darius Slayton if Darren Waller Retires
Giants Face Crucial Offseason Decisions with Waller's Potential Retirement
If tight end Darren Waller decides to retire this offseason, the New York Giants might contemplate parting ways with one of their key offensive assets to pave the way for significant roster enhancements.
Darius Slayton Emerges as a Prime Trade Candidate
CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin identified wide receiver Darius Slayton as the Giants’ leading trade candidate while evaluating the most pressing needs for all 32 NFL teams at this stage of the offseason (h/t Kevin Hickey of The Sporting News).
“Skipping voluntary workouts, seemingly in pursuit of a new contract, Slayton has quietly surpassed 700 receiving yards in four of his five NFL seasons. However, with first-round pick Malik Nabers now in the mix, he is more expendable. Releasing or trading him could save the Giants between $3.8 million and $6.4 million,” Benjamin wrote on May 30.
Slayton Returns to a Crowded Giants Receiving Corps
Slayton rejoined the Giants’ OTA sessions on May 28, adding depth to an already crowded wide receiver group. As the Giants head into the 2024 season, rookie Malik Nabers, the No. 6 overall pick, is expected to be the focal point of the passing game.
Despite leading New York with 770 receiving yards in 2023, Slayton faces stiff competition for the WR2 spot opposite Nabers. Jalin Hyatt, known for his big-play ability, has impressed during OTA’s, showcasing improvement following a 2023 season where he led the team with 16.2 yards per reception. Meanwhile, Wan’Dale Robinson is entering the 2024 campaign with high expectations, backed by his dependable hands and a solid 76.9 percent catch rate from the previous season.
Financial Flexibility with Potential Slayton Move
If the Giants decide to part ways with Slayton, they would have one of the youngest receiving units in the league. The $6.4 million saved from his release could be redirected to make impactful moves elsewhere on the roster. However, the potential impact of these savings might be limited, especially with many top free agents already off the market.
Strategic Offseason Moves on the Horizon
The Giants’ handling of the Slayton situation remains fluid. If Darren Waller retires, freeing up $11.6 million in cap space, the combined savings of up to $18 million—including the potential $6.4 million from Slayton—could be strategically used to enhance the offense. This financial flexibility would enable the Giants to bolster their young core with a game-changing acquisition, potentially reigniting their playoff aspirations.
