Insights from Zeke Mayo: Hunter Dickinson’s Return

Yesterday, Zeke Mayo, a highly regarded transfer from South Dakota State and a Lawrence native, announced his commitment to join the Kansas Jayhawks. As the reigning Summit League Player of the Year for the 2023-24 season, Mayo emerged as one of the top talents in the transfer portal, opting to spend his final year of collegiate eligibility in his hometown.

Following his decision to join the Jayhawks, Mayo participated in an interview with the Lawrence Journal-World, offering insights that shed light on a significant question for the offseason. In his statement, Mayo expressed his enthusiasm about joining a team with abundant experience, depth, and potential for growth.

“We are incredibly excited to be part of such a talented team with immense experience and potential for growth,” Mayo remarked. “This team exemplifies grit and talent both inside and out. I eagerly anticipate playing alongside the exceptional point guard Dajuan Harris and a versatile center who possesses scoring abilities both inside and beyond the arc.”

Mayo’s reference to a center capable of scoring both inside and out likely alludes to Dickinson, although the latter’s decision regarding his future remains uncertain, as he contemplates entering the NBA Draft or returning to school. Mayo’s remarks may have inadvertently disclosed information not yet publicly revealed.

Dickinson delivered impressive performances during his debut season in Lawrence, averaging 17.9 points, 10.9 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.4 blocks per game while shooting 54.8% from the field. His accolades include Second Team Consensus All-American honors and the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year award.

Despite receiving less acclaim from professional scouts, Dickinson has refrained from announcing his basketball plans for the upcoming season. With one more year of collegiate eligibility remaining due to his participation in the 2020-21 COVID-19-affected season, Dickinson’s decision holds significant weight for both himself and the Kansas basketball program.

While Mayo’s statement may have been a simple slip of words, it raises the possibility of an unreleased update. Regardless, if Dickinson opts to return to Kansas for another campaign, the Jayhawks would likely emerge as prominent contenders for top honors in preseason rankings.
