$2 Million O’Connell Favorite Tipped as Vikings’ Top Breakout Star
The Minnesota Vikings might be looking for a new starting wide receiver, but they likely already have a strong candidate on their roster.
Kevin Seifert of ESPN forecasted that Brandon Powell will emerge as the team’s biggest surprise this season, solidifying his role as the slot wideout after a standout year in 2023.
“During the O’Connell era, the Vikings’ base offense has primarily utilized 11 personnel, which typically involves three receivers,” Seifert wrote on Wednesday, May 22. “Unless O’Connell plans to significantly alter his strategy in his third season, there’s a notable need for a third receiver to complement Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison. Powell stepped into that role effectively last season when Jefferson was sidelined with a hamstring injury, and he has a strong opportunity to secure a permanent spot in 2024.”
Last year, Powell recorded 29 receptions for 324 yards and one touchdown, according to Pro Football Reference. He also led the league with 37 punt returns, accumulating 289 total yards and averaging 7.8 yards per return.
If Powell can step up as the third starting receiver following K.J. Osborn’s move to the New England Patriots in free agency, he will provide tremendous value for the Vikings, as he is currently on a one-year contract worth just $2 million.
