The Cowboys drops linebacker Rashaan Evans the day following his arrest on drug-related charges.
The Dallas Cowboys released linebacker Rashaan Evans on Wednesday, one day after he was arrested for marijuana possession.
In response to this, the Cowboys activated offensive lineman Matt Waletzko from injured reserve.
The decision to sign Evans came in Week 5, following the loss of fellow linebacker Leighton Vander Esch to a season-ending neck injury. While addressing the roster changes on Wednesday, Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy did not comment on the arrest.
If Evans clears waivers, he has the option to join the team’s practice squad. McCarthy acknowledged the difficulty of such roster decisions, especially considering the team’s overall health. He emphasized the necessity of making tough choices, particularly during this time of the year when projections and considerations for young players come into play.
Since joining the Cowboys, the 28-year-old Evans has recorded nine tackles in nine games, including one start, and contributed to special teams.
A Frisco, Texas, police official verified to The Dallas Morning News and KPRC that Rashaan Evans was indeed arrested on Tuesday for marijuana possession. Evans, a first-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, has accumulated 485 tackles and five sacks in 85 career games, making 68 starts for the Tennessee Titans (2018-2021), Atlanta Falcons (2022), and the Cowboys.
He was initially selected as the 22nd overall pick by the Titans in 2018.
Waletzko was a fifth-round pick by Dallas in the 2022 draft and saw action in three games during the previous season.
