Cowboys’ Tyler Smith experiences a torn plantar fascia in his foot, surprisingly turning out to be more positive than expected.
Typically, news of a player sustaining a complete tear in their foot raises concerns, but for Dallas Cowboys guard Tyler Smith, the recent update brings unexpectedly positive news. In the Cowboys’ 20-19 victory over the Detroit Lions, Smith is reported to have fully torn the plantar fascia in his foot, as per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Surprisingly, this is considered good news for Smith, as full tears are often preferable to partial tears, which can result in longer recovery periods.
In the third quarter of the game, Smith went down and clutched his foot. Despite entering the medical tent and not returning to the game, he was seen moving without assistance. An MRI conducted on Sunday confirmed the complete tear of the plantar fascia. Remarkably, Smith did not experience any loss of strength in his foot and felt he could have reentered the game.
The standout player on the Cowboys’ offensive line is expected to have minimal downtime due to the injury. There is even optimism that he may be available for the Week 18 finale against the Washington Commanders. The Cowboys, vying for the NFC East title, could secure it with a win, coupled with the Philadelphia Eagles losing one of their remaining two games.
In Smith’s absence during the recent game, undrafted rookie T.J. Bass stepped in, and he is poised to start if Smith is unable to play in the upcoming week.
