During the regular season, Carolina did not lead for a single second in the fourth quarter. According to ESPN’s David Newton, they became the second team in history to accomplish that record, the first being the 1982 Baltimore Colts. The Colts were in the midst of a strike-shortened season.

During his troubles, Young appeared in eight games without throwing a touchdown pass. That is the third-most for a rookie quarterback since 1950 and the second-most for a first-round choice, according to Newton.

Panthers fail to capitalize

Carolina finished the season 2-15 overall. It was the Panthers’ first loss in fewer than five games since 2010. Young failed to live up to expectations as the No. 1 overall pick, throwing for 2,877 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.

Despite their problems and dismal records, interim head coach Chris Tabor sees a bright future for Young and the Panthers. Despite losing to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 18, Tabor expressed confidence in Young’s future, according to the Associated Press.

“I think when he is in year 12 and winning a lot of games and slicing people up a little bit, I think he will remember his first year and probably look back and say, ‘you know what, it stunk at the time but this helped me get to where I’m at,'” said Tabor. “He has a really bright future.”

It wasn’t the start Carolina or Bryce Young had hoped for. The Panthers’ redeeming grace is that they can only go better from here.
