A wide receiver from Michigan has entered the transfer portal.
Michigan wide receiver Darrius Clemons has reportedly entered the transfer portal, according to information gathered by 247Sports on Wednesday. Clemons, a former four-star prospect from the class of 2022, has participated in 20 games during his two-year tenure with the Wolverines. In the most recent season, he recorded three catches for 33 yards across nine games.
While it’s possible for players to withdraw from the Transfer Portal and stay with their current programs, Clemons’ likely departure raises uncertainties for Michigan’s receiving corps in the upcoming 2024 season. The team is also set to lose Cornelius Johnson and probably Roman Wilson, their top two receivers in terms of productivity. Semaj Morgan and Tyler Morris, who ranked third and fourth in receptions among receivers, are expected to return but are better suited for the slot position.
During the summer, Ron Bellamy, the wide receiver coach for Michigan, provided insights into Darrius Clemons’ progress in practice leading up to the 2023 season:
“Darrius had a great spring in his own right. He’s a big target, standing at 6-4, and he’s one of the fastest guys on our team. Over the offseason, Clemons has significantly expanded his skill set, adding more tools to his toolbox. I’m eagerly anticipating seeing what he brings to the table during this camp.”
Clemons himself shared his thoughts with The Michigan Insider last summer, acknowledging the crucial role of veteran leadership from Ronnie Bell in helping him adjust to college life:
“Since I got to college, Ronnie was in my very first lifting group, and he kind of took me under his wing. We developed a really good relationship, and I consider him one of my better friends. It’s easy to respect someone who’s already where you want to go. If he’s advising you to step up in practice or improve your game, it’s easy to respect that and respond positively. It wasn’t always easy, but I knew he always had my best interests at heart.”
In my discussion with Coach Bell about becoming a starter and a prominent player, he emphasized that I already possess the necessary skills, and the key is to execute them consistently. It’s a challenge for me to elevate my efforts, aiming to dominate not only in practice and scrimmages but ultimately in the games themselves. I’m committed to working harder and striving for excellence.
According to Darrius Clemons’ high school scouting report by 247Sports National Recruiting Editor Brandon Huffman:
Clemons displays exceptional body control, is adept at adjusting to passes at various heights, and boasts strong hands that can secure catches in traffic. His route-running is polished, and he excels at catching passes in tight spaces, particularly tough over the middle. Consistently creating separation, he is projected to be a multi-year Power 5 starter and a potential candidate for the NFL Draft.
Hailing from Portland, Oregon, Clemons chose the Wolverines over schools like Auburn, Penn State, Oregon, and Miami during his high school recruitment. His time at Michigan includes two Big Ten championships and a national championship, marking a successful collegiate career.
