Reports indicate that Wesley McGriff is set to make a return to Auburn after it was initially announced that he would be joining the staff at Texas A&M University.
News emerged on December 31 that Wesley McGriff, Auburn’s secondary coach, would be joining Mike Elko’s inaugural coaching staff at Texas A&M.
However, the official announcement from Texas A&M came on January 3, confirming McGriff’s role as the Aggies’ defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator.
Unexpectedly, on Friday, reports surfaced indicating a change in plans. Justin Hokanson of On3 Sports was the first to report in the afternoon that McGriff’s move to College Station had come to a sudden stop, with McGriff set to return to Auburn to coach the defensive backs for the Tigers.
“Wesley McGriff departed Auburn for Texas A&M immediately after the Music City Bowl, but it seems he never fully executed his contract,” Hokanson posted on X, the social platform formerly known as Twitter.
McGriff’s reported return to Auburn comes just four days after Ron Roberts left for Florida, having served as Auburn’s defensive coordinator during the 2023 season. Hokanson previously reported that Roberts’ “no-nonsense style caused some issues internally,” leading to McGriff’s departure from his on-the-field role midway through Auburn’s season.
During McGriff’s time away from on-the-field duties, he remained with the Auburn program, assisting with in-house recruiting, as mentioned by head coach Hugh Freeze on October 23.
At the conclusion of Auburn’s season, despite Roberts still being on staff, McGriff explored other opportunities and eventually joined Mike Elko’s staff in College Station.
Now, with Roberts no longer part of the staff, McGriff seems to be back at Auburn. McGriff initially joined Hugh Freeze’s staff at Auburn on December 23, 2022, marking his third stint with the Tigers. Before joining Freeze’s staff, McGriff served as Louisville’s defensive secondary coach in the 2022 season and has held coaching positions at Kentucky, Baylor, Miami, Vanderbilt, Ole Miss, and Florida, among others.
