The New York Jets are considering a veteran quarterback with a connection to the team as a “possible target,” with a potential contract value of $72.75 million.

New York Jets GM Joe Douglas acknowledged a strong likelihood of acquiring a veteran quarterback during the upcoming offseason. Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic has identified Las Vegas Raiders veteran Jimmy Garoppolo as a potential target for the Jets, particularly if he becomes available after being released. Garoppolo is currently under contract for two more years, with a deal valued at $72.75 million, signed in 2023.

Jimmy Garoppolo, Raiders

The Raiders are expected to release Jimmy Garoppolo, as outlined by Bill Barnwell of ESPN. Garoppolo, who made just over $35 million for six starts with the Raiders, will see $11.3 million of that amount in a guaranteed bonus due next season. This move will result in nearly $29 million in dead money for the Raiders over the next two years.

Throughout the past season, the 32-year-old quarterback participated in seven games, starting in six. While some of his absence can be attributed to injuries, a significant portion was due to a coaching decision. After the Raiders underwent a coaching change from Josh McDaniels to Antonio Pierce, Garoppolo was benched for the remainder of the season.

Rich Cimini of ESPN noted that Garoppolo could be of interest to the Jets if he is released by the Raiders. Notably, Garoppolo shares a connection with head coach Robert Saleh from their time together with the San Francisco 49ers.
