Patriots Reach Out to Wide Receiver for Potential Comeback
In their effort to bounce back from a disappointing 4-13 season, the New England Patriots are swiftly taking action. Beyond focusing on coaching and front office changes in the post-Bill Belichick era, the team is actively exploring improvements to its roster.
According to a Tuesday morning report from the Boston Herald, the Patriots have reached out to wide receiver Kendrick Bourne regarding a possible contract extension. The communication so far has been described as preliminary, and no deal is currently seen as imminent.
After a disappointing performance in 2022, Kendrick Bourne experienced a resurgence within the Patriots’ offense, often standing out as a lone bright spot amid the collective struggles of the unit. Unfortunately, his season was cut short when he suffered a torn ACL during the first play of the fourth quarter in the Week 8 loss to the Miami Dolphins.
Despite the setback, Bourne showcased his talent in that game, making three receptions on four targets for 36 yards, including a touchdown. Following surgery to repair the ACL injury, he is expected to be ready for the start of NFL training camps.
Before the injury, Bourne had emerged as the Patriots’ primary receiver, tallying 37 catches for 406 yards and four touchdowns in eight games. Despite his impressive productivity, trade rumors surrounded Bourne due to his value and the fact that he was playing in the final year of a three-year contract signed with New England in 2021. Ultimately, the Patriots had to place the 28-year-old on season-ending injured reserve.
Since joining the Patriots, Bourne has demonstrated versatility within the team’s offense. Over three seasons, the Eastern Washington product accumulated 1,640 yards on 127 catches, with 10 touchdowns. While excelling in various receiver roles, Bourne has shown particular comfort in the Z-receiver position and occasionally in the slot. Additionally, he has taken on the ‘X’ receiver role with success.
Bourne has also contributed as a ball carrier, taking on jet sweeps and designing runs. His adaptability made him a reliable target for quarterbacks Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe when he was healthy.
