Will O’Brien, Patriots, Emulate Belichick?
The New England Patriots could be looking for a new offensive coordinator after a recent report revealed Bill O’Brien’s potential status.
Even though the New England Patriots formally introduced Jerod Mayo as their new coach during the Wednesday introductory press conference, he has wasted no time in initiating the process of assembling his coaching staff. Reports suggest that Mayo has already conducted an interview with Tem Lukabu, the current outside linebacker coach for the Carolina Panthers, and has expressed interest in meeting with Marquise Williams, the special teams coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons.
Nevertheless, there is still uncertainty surrounding what could be Jerod Mayo’s most crucial coaching appointment—the offensive coordinator position. Despite the New England Patriots enduring a challenging 4-13 season with their offense performing poorly across various statistical categories, it remains uncertain if the current play-caller, Bill O’Brien, will depart. However, a report from Mike Giardi of the Boston Sports Journal suggests that this outcome might still be a possibility.
“The impression I gather regarding the offensive coordinator position is that a fresh perspective will take the lead,” states Giardi. “While Bill O’Brien has one year left on his contract (some sources indicate two years), and he has enjoyed being back home, his loyalty to Belichick might prompt him to explore opportunities with the person who played a role in bringing him back or, at the very least, approve his return in 2023.”
Giardi further commented that he maintains the belief that, at 54 years old, O’Brien still harbors aspirations of becoming a head coach again.
Considering Bill Belichick is being seriously considered to take over as the Atlanta Falcons coach, as indicated by his interview with the team, Bill O’Brien might secure a new position relatively soon.
Witnessing O’Brien depart Foxboro for the second time in his career wouldn’t be unexpected, especially given a prior report that identified his former successor, Josh McDaniels, as a potential candidate to once again assume the role of offensive coordinator for the Patriots.
Similar to O’Brien, McDaniels has significant connections to Belichick, making him another potential candidate to either join him in Atlanta or secure his next role as an offensive coordinator.
