“Los Angeles Chargers Conclude Interview with Jeff Ireland for Open General Manager Position, Adding to the Growing List of Candidates”
The Los Angeles Chargers declared on Wednesday that their interview with Jeff Ireland for the general manager position that is currently open is over. Six applicants have now been interviewed by the franchise for the position.
Ireland, 53, joined the New Orleans Saints in 2015 as director of college scouting and assistant general manager. He was appointed general manager of the Miami Dolphins after the 2007 season by former executive vice president of football operations Bill Parcells.
Many will remember that in 2012 and again in 2013, supporters bought an airplane banner demanding that he be sacked. Ireland’s relationship with the franchise ended after the 2013 campaign. After that, he became a consultant with the Seattle Seahawks ahead of the 2014 NFL Draft.
In 2008, Ireland’s first season as general manager, Miami went 11-5. After that, the team ended below.500 four times in a row before finishing 8-8 in 2013.
To give you one more reminder, these are the players the Dolphins selected in the first round over that period:
- Jake Long (First Overall) in 2008
- Vontae Davis (25th Overall) in 2009
- 2010: 28th overall, Jared Odrick
- Mike Pouncey (15th overall) in 2011
- Ryan Tannehill (eighth overall) in 2012
- Dion Jordan, third overall, in 2013.
