Patriots Jerod Mayo receiving unspeakable hate from right-wing racists in 2024.

It is an honor for supporters to have a head coach who is willing to lead his squad and is socially active.

I think the New England Patriots made a great choice in hiring Jerod Mayo as their new head coach, even though I may not ultimately agree with his ideology. For the same reasons that Mayo had, Dan Campbell, the head coach of the Detroit Lions, proved to be an excellent coach despite my initial reservations about his lack of expertise. While Campbell gave a weird press conference to begin his career, calling himself a “knee-biter,” Mayo just expressed his gratitude for being the first African-American head coach in New England Patriots history. It was surprising that the latter interview was the one that was examined the most.

Racist Assaults on Patriots Head Coach Jerod Mayo for Being “Woke”

To begin with, being called “woke” is one of the most offensive terms in history because it merely criticizes someone for appreciating different cultures and ethnicities. Remarkably, right-wing pundits and supporters sling it about like it’s candy. Though I always find it difficult to bring in a younger coach without prior experience as an offensive or defensive coordinator, it is about the only thing I have against Mayo, who otherwise looks incredibly capable of leading New England.

Initially, Mayo was a highly sought-after talent from the University of Tennessee, having been taken by New England in 2008 with the 10th overall pick. Mayo was a highly regarded inside linebacker who played his whole seven-year career in New England. He was selected to the Pro Bowl twice and won a Super Bowl with the team. Subsequently, Mayo demonstrated his obvious intelligence as a young man by working for three years in the financial services industry before becoming the inside linebackers coach and joining the coaching staff of his previous team in 2019.

Mayo was so well-liked during his career that it was literally spelled out in Bill Belichick’s contract that he would take over as head coach after Belichick left. As a result, Mayo took over as soon as the top coach left, and during his first news conference, he essentially stated that he was proud to be the first African American head coach and that he didn’t want to act as though racism wasn’t a significant issue in the NFL. Regretfully, you receive a lot of unjustified criticism from supporters like the one below when a rookie player in this league makes a statement like that.

It is astonishing that fans are so unaware of the fact that it is very difficult for young African American men to advance through the ranks of the NFL. The issue is so great for New England that they will benefit from the Rooney rule even if they hired Mayo because of his race.

The franchise will really receive draft compensation after elevating a minority coach, which will eventually aid in the development of the team’s skill base. Even while it’s terrible that hiring good coaches in the NFL requires this, Mayo can really use it to his advantage, especially if he decides to cultivate minority coaches who can be hired by other teams.

It is no secret that a sizable portion of right-wing NFL fans actively oppose the “woke” movement, but at this particular time, I commend Jerod Mayo and the New England Patriots for bringing attention to this issue. Mayo was absolutely right when he mentioned that acting as though it doesn’t exist is essentially endorsing the behavior in the first place, even though many people are unwilling to accept it because it makes them feel bad about their beloved sports franchise.
