Russell Wilson’s enigmatic tweet raises speculation about his future with the Broncos.

Nearly four weeks after Russell Wilson was benched, uncertainty persists regarding the quarterback situation for the Denver Broncos. Wilson asserts that he was benched due to his refusal to waive the injury guarantees in his contract, a claim denied by Broncos GM George Paton.

Following the news of his benching, Wilson leaked his expectation to the media that the Broncos would release him in 2024. However, in a seeming contradiction, he has also conveyed his desire to stay with the Broncos to complete what he initiated when the Seattle Seahawks traded him to Denver in the spring of 2022. The quarterback situation remains unresolved, leaving the Broncos and their fans awaiting clarity on the path forward.

During their end-of-season press conferences, both General Manager George Paton and Broncos head coach Sean Payton expressed that the “door is open” for Russell Wilson’s potential return to the team. However, CEO Greg Penner acknowledged the financial aspects of Wilson’s contract as a significant factor for the team and player moving forward.

In a recent tweet, Wilson hinted at envisioning a future with the Broncos in 2024, specifically mentioning his favorite plays of 2023, including a notable connection with wide receiver Courtland Sutton. The tweet indicated optimism for the upcoming season and suggested a continued partnership with Sutton, who caught 10 touchdown passes from Wilson in 2023.

Despite Sutton’s recent cryptic Instagram post that seemed to suggest a goodbye to Broncos Country, financial constraints, with the team being $24 million above the salary cap, add uncertainty to the situation. The Broncos face numerous roster holes and need upgrades in various positions, complicating the decision-making process.

Keeping Wilson on the roster for another season seems like a straightforward solution, given the guaranteed $17 million salary in 2024. However, releasing Wilson this offseason could lead to significant dead-money hits on the salary cap, making it a complex financial decision for the team.

The Broncos’ brain trust is set to address the Wilson situation as a top priority, with fans possibly getting a resolution in the coming week. The outcome will likely depend on negotiations between the team and Wilson and how willing both parties are to find a mutually beneficial solution.
