Reportedly, the Jacksonville Jaguars are on track to appoint ex-Atlanta Falcons assistant Ryan Nielsen.
The Jacksonville Jaguars have finalized their selection for a new defensive coordinator, with Ryan Nielsen securing the position. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the conclusion of the Jaguars’ two-week quest for a defensive coordinator, naming Nielsen as the chosen candidate.
Nielsen, who recently completed his inaugural year as the defensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons, had initially drawn interest from the Jaguars. However, the Falcons initially prevented the interview request, but the restriction was lifted last week, paving the way for Nielsen to join Doug Pederson’s coaching staff.
Following a challenging 9-8 season, the Jaguars are seeking a fresh perspective on their defensive strategies. Nielsen’s responsibilities will include enhancing the consistency of the front seven and addressing issues that affected the team throughout the 2023 season.
At 44 years old, Nielsen recently completed his first season with the Falcons, where they ranked 18th in points allowed, 12th in EPA/Play, 5th in success rate, and 1st in rushing EPA/Play.
Nielsen entered the NFL in 2017 when the New Orleans Saints hired him from NC State. After four years as the Saints’ defensive line coach, he was promoted to assistant head coach in 2021 and then co-defensive coordinator in 2022. Nielsen was also considered by LSU as a defensive coordinator candidate in 2021.
The Jaguars initiated the search for a new defensive coordinator following the dismissal of former coordinator Mike Caldwell two weeks ago. This move was part of a broader restructuring that saw seven other defensive assistants also relieved of their duties, leaving only three of Pederson’s original 11 defensive staff members still in place.
