The Broncos ink a future deal with Tanner McCalister, the former defensive back from the Browns.
In the latest move to strengthen their 2024 offseason roster, the Denver Broncos have officially signed defensive back Tanner McCalister to a reserve/future contract. The announcement came on Monday.
McCalister, aged 24, entered the NFL undrafted from Ohio State last April and spent his rookie season with the Cleveland Browns, primarily on the practice squad. He made appearances in three games, recording two combined tackles in a total of 56 snaps.
During his college career, the 5-foot-11, 191-pound defender had an impressive final season with the Buckeyes, amassing 20 solo stops, three interceptions, and a pass breakup. Prior to that, he transferred from Oklahoma State, where he accumulated 123 tackles, 12 pass deflections, and one interception from 2018 to 2021.
Described by Pro Football Network draft expert Tony Pauline as “effective facing the action, remains disciplined with assignments, and has a quick closing burst,” McCalister is noted for his ability to read the quarterback’s eyes, make timely interceptions, and contribute against the run. He is also praised for his tackling skills and effectiveness in bringing down opponents in the open field.
With this signing, McCalister becomes the 13th player to secure a futures deal with the Denver Broncos in the current offseason. He joins other notable names such as quarterback Ben DiNucci, running back Tyler Badie, wide receivers Phillip Dorsett and David Sills, offensive linemen Will Sherman and Demontrey Jacobs, defensive tackle Jordan Jackson, inside linebacker Durell Nchami, outside linebacker Ronnie Perkins, cornerback Reese Taylor, and defensive backs Keidron Smith and Devon Key.
