Quarterback Kirk Cousins, despite recovering from a torn Achilles, is poised to enter free agency with little impact on his initial contract demands.
According to Charley Walters of the Pioneer Press, the Minnesota Vikings’ quarterback could command up to $90 million guaranteed over a two-year period in the open market, a figure that would likely preclude the Vikings from re-signing him.
Cousins, who notably signed a three-year, $84 million fully guaranteed deal in 2018, is now aiming for even higher compensation over a shorter time frame, driven by the escalating costs in the quarterback market since his last contract. For instance, an annual salary of $45 million would only place him marginally in the top ten among quarterbacks.
While expressing a desire to return to the Vikings, Cousins may need to adjust his demands given their financial constraints. The team has lacked a clear alternative to him in the short term, and he has earned three Pro Bowl selections during his tenure with them.
