There was a slight possibility that Asante Samuel’s fears were going to materialize this off season. Samuel, a former corner back for the Patriots, consistently voices his opposition to Belichick whenever he can.
With Belichick’s departure from New England, the Chargers, a team that employs Samuel’s son, presented an attractive coaching vacancy. However, it appears that Belichick was never considered for the position in Los Angeles, where Jim Harbaugh has now taken the helm. The four-time Pro Bowl pick understandably breathed a sigh of relief when the Chargers opted not to bring on his former coach.
“I absolutely did not want that scenario to unfold. Thank goodness, it didn’t. There could have been complications. He would have faced challenges he might not have been prepared for. He would’ve needed to rebuild from scratch.
Some of those tactics, like shuffling players around, benching starters, and playing mind games, I don’t think he would’ve handled well. I wouldn’t want my son to navigate through that. So, I’m relieved that Coach Belichick didn’t land the head coaching job with the LA Chargers.”
In a somewhat surprising turn of events, it’s increasingly likely that Belichick won’t secure a coaching position anywhere this off season and may have to wait until 2025 for his next chance. If that unfolds, you can bet Samuel will revel in his triumph.
