The reported cost for securing the services of Kirk Cousins

The Falcons have addressed two crucial aspects of the offseason by appointing a head coach and offensive coordinator. Raheem Morris, unexpectedly named head coach, emerged as a preferable choice over Bill Belichick due to the latter’s extensive demands. Morris, being younger and more relatable to players, is seen as a better fit for the Falcons’ timeline, particularly in navigating the challenges of finding a long-term quarterback solution.

The pivotal move, given the absence of an offensive-minded head coach, was the selection of the offensive coordinator. Morris successfully secured Zac Robinson, a highly sought-after candidate, beating out competition from several other teams with offensive coordinator vacancies. Robinson’s decision to join the Falcons has been considered a significant win for Morris and the team.

While Morris has excelled in building a standout coaching staff, the ultimate success hinges on finding a competent quarterback. The Falcons are urged to avoid half-measures and actively pursue a franchise quarterback. Drafting one would be ideal, but if that’s not feasible, acquiring a talent like Justin Fields through trade could be explored.

However, caution is advised against overdrafting certain prospects or making a trade without consensus between general manager Terry Fontenot and Morris. Although the free-agent quarterback class is not as robust, Kirk Cousins emerges as a top option. Opting for Cousins would signal a commitment to the 2024 and 2025 seasons, given that he will turn 36 at the start of the upcoming season.

While the Falcons possess the necessary cap space and draft capital for such a move, the financial investment in Cousins is significant. According to Charley Walters of The Pioneer Press, Cousins could command up to $90 million guaranteed for two years in free agency. Despite recovering from Achilles surgery, Cousins, if he returns to his pre-injury form, could justify the expenditure with impressive passing statistics.

The allure of working with offensive coordinator Zac Robinson and a talented offensive roster could make Atlanta an enticing destination for Cousins. While a long-term solution at quarterback is the goal, securing Cousins could be a viable and beneficial interim resolution for the Falcons.
