Breaking News: Patriots have signed their special teams coordinator.

Jerod Mayo has now brought on a second coordinator as he continues to bolster his coaching staff.

NFL Network reports that Jeremy Springer, the assistant special teams coach for the Rams, will be joining the New England Patriots as their new special teams coordinator.

After working as an assistant in Los Angeles for the previous two seasons, Springer joins the crew in New England. He had been a college special teams coach for eight years before playing his first two seasons in the NFL.

In an interview with Tucson.com from his days as the special teams coordinator for the Arizona Wildcats, Springer seems like a good personality match for Mayo.

“First and foremost, exude a great deal of passion and energy. I’ll be saying that a lot to you,” he said. “Maintain consistency in your technique, passion, and energy.” and showing up for work each day. The players will notice it immediately if you are inconsistent with it.

The soon-to-be 35-year-old was one of three applicants to interview with the Patriots for the role; Falcons special teams coach Marquice Williams was allegedly given the job before he chose to remain in Atlanta. Thomas McGaughey, a former special teams coordinator for the Giants, also attended interviews for the role.

The group that Joe Judge, Joe Houston, and Cam Achord headed during the previous season will be commanded by Springer. Achord, who coached in a contract year the previous season, and Judge’s future plans are unknown at this time. Houston, meantime, is said to have accepted a comparable position at the University of Florida.

All eyes are now on Mayo’s pursuit of an offensive coordinator with the appointment of Springer and DeMarcus Covington as defensive coordinators.
