Addressing Offensive Needs: Potential Addition of K.J. Osborn to the Cleveland Browns

The Cleveland Browns may not emerge as major contenders in free agency this year, but that doesn’t diminish the pressing needs to address during the offseason.

While the defense showcased dominance throughout the season, the offense could emerge as a focal point for enhancements this spring. One potential addition that Pro Football Focus has highlighted for Cleveland is Minnesota Vikings wide receiver K.J. Osborn.

“In 2022, Osborn primarily operated in the slot, transitioning to the outside in 2023,” noted PFF’s Brad Spielberger. “He’s typically a WR3/4 but has demonstrated productivity within the Vikings’ high-volume passing scheme. Though he faced some untimely drops in 2023, he could offer valuable depth for numerous teams. With the arrival of first-round rookie Jordan Addison and the emergence of Brandon Powell last season, perhaps Minnesota will strive harder to retain Powell at a more affordable rate.”

Osborn’s statistics for the season amounted to 48 receptions, 540 yards, and three touchdowns, marking career lows across his three seasons of extended play. Given his diminished role in Minnesota, he appears poised to find a new home with a team in need of receiving depth.

The Browns stand as one of those teams. With quarterback Deshaun Watson expected to return in full health, there’s a necessity for a complete set of skill position players to rebound from a season marred by injuries in 2023.

While wideouts Amari Cooper and Elijah Moore are expected to return, and Cedric Tillman will embark on his second NFL season, the status of other receivers such as Marquise Goodwin, James Proche, and Jakeem Grant remains uncertain as they are likely to enter free agency.

Osborn may not possess flashy attributes, but he serves as a reliable backup wide receiver capable of delivering in crucial moments. Moreover, his potential acquisition is unlikely to incur significant expenses, aligning with Cleveland’s offseason objectives.
