Breaking News: Packers bolster their coaching staff with a new quarterback
GREEN BAY, Wisconsin: Former NFL quarterback Sean Mannion, a student of Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur, has joined the coaching staff.
Brady Henderson of ESPN.com has stated that Mannion will work with quarterbacks and the passing game.
Mannion played in the NFL for nine years. Notably, he played for the Los Angeles Rams in 2017 while offensive coach LaFleur was employed there.
LaFleur remarked, “I don’t think I have to dig up many notes,” prior to possibly playing Mannion and the Minnesota Vikings in 2021. “To begin with, such a wonderful person and excellent colleague. He has a really powerful arm. He will follow the coaches’ instructions to the letter. In that sense, he is really dependable. He is a player and a guy for whom I have a great deal of respect.
Mannion, who was selected by the St. Louis Rams in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft, spent this season practicing with both the Vikings and the Seattle Seahawks. Week 17 of the 2021 season marked his final playing time as a member of the Vikings at Lambeau Field against the Packers. On 22 of 36 passes, he gained 189 yards.
Mannion participated in 14 games during his career, with the Rams having a career-high five games in 2017. Throughout his career, he had a 66.2 rating, one touchdown, three interceptions, and a completion percentage of 60.9 percent.
There are several reasons why the hire makes sense.
One was the 70th birthday of seasoned quarterbacks coach Tom Clements in June. LaFleur is hoping that Clements will be back for a minimum of one more season. The Packers will ultimately require a new position coach, even if he does.
“I believe that’s something we will resolve.” LaFleur declared at the conclusion of the season, “I’m hopeful.” He has a lengthy history of doing this. He has, in my opinion, the right to choose what’s best for himself and his family. Undoubtedly, he made a significant sacrifice by moving to Green Bay and giving up his life in California.
“But, man, the coach is a man whose significance to us cannot be overstated. Two years ago, I had no idea what we would end up getting into, but I believe Tom has made us all better off overall. Having Tom around has made me a better coach, in my opinion. Tom’s presence was definitely beneficial to our guys, in my opinion. He’s a fantastic friend, coach, and man.
Second, for his efforts in transforming Green Bay’s weakest passing game in the league into a potent assault in the second half of the season, passing game coordinator and receivers coach Jason Vrable is regarded as an emerging coach. Mannion could be prepared to take on the coordinator post if Vrable ever obtains one.
Third, Connor Lewis, the team’s assistant quarterbacks coach and one of LaFleur’s right-hand men, has aided Clements during the last two years. Like like Vrable, Lewis will eventually be considered for a promotion.
Presumably, a link exists since Mannion and quarterback Jordan Love are both represented by the same agency, Athletes First.
