The New York Jets cannot overlook the necessity for a backup quarterback in the offseason. It’s widely acknowledged that signing a proficient veteran backup will be a priority on general manager Joe Douglas’ agenda. However, considering a rookie project wouldn’t be a bad idea either. Could Spencer Rattler, the Senior Bowl MVP from this past weekend, fit the bill as a prospect of interest for New York?
Rattler, a former player for South Carolina and Oklahoma, impressed with a flawless performance, completing all four of his passes for 65 yards and a touchdown throw to Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint in the opening drive of the game. His stellar performance during the game and practice sessions earned him the MVP title.
According to evaluations from Pro Football Network and other prominent draft sites, Rattler is currently projected as an early Day-Three quarterback with the potential to rise into the second or third rounds come April. This projection marks a significant shift from the ups and downs of his college career, where he struggled to maintain consistency, notably losing his starting position to Caleb Williams midway through his sophomore season at Oklahoma after initially replacing Jalen Hurts. However, his subsequent transfer to South Carolina showcased his abilities, throwing for 6,200 yards and 37 touchdown passes over two seasons.
Despite being 23 years old, Rattler is not among the youngest quarterbacks entering his rookie season in the NFL. Nevertheless, his strong arm and athleticism are likely to attract interest from numerous teams, particularly those seeking prospects in the later rounds of the draft – a category the Jets fall into. Given their recent challenges in maximizing the potential of former second-overall pick Zach Wilson, the Jets could benefit from securing a young quarterback to develop behind the experienced Aaron Rodgers, a four-time NFL MVP. Learning under a seasoned quarterback of Rodgers’ caliber could be invaluable for any emerging young talent.
With five draft picks currently in the 2024 draft and potentially three more conditional picks on the horizon after losing free agents last season, the Jets have ample opportunity to address their quarterback situation for the future. Considering the potential total of eight draft picks, it’s reasonable to anticipate that the Jets will explore quarterback options in the later rounds of the NFL Draft.
