Breaking News: Ohio State has secured a new offensive coordinator to replace Bill O’Brien.

Soon after accepting the role of offensive coordinator for Ohio State football, Bill O’Brien departed to assume the head coaching position at Boston College. Now, the Buckeyes are faced with the task of filling this significant role, and it appears they are considering some promising alternatives. Among them is Chip Kelly, the current head coach at UCLA.

Recently, Chip Kelly has been the subject of various rumors, including interest from NFL teams seeking him as an offensive coordinator.

Now, it seems that Ohio State football could also be considering him for a role, as suggested by Dave Biddle and Jonah Booker of The Morning Five on 247 Sports. Kelly was initially among the original candidates for the position before Bill O’Brien’s appointment. However, despite his candidacy, Biddle and Booker express reservations about Kelly coaching the Buckeyes.

“I’m curious to understand Chip’s motivations for wanting to leave UCLA as head coach. UCLA’s recruiting hasn’t been impressive, which raises doubts about whether Chip Kelly still possesses the same capabilities he had at Oregon. Is he past his prime? Additionally, it’s unlikely that Ohio State will secure a highly effective recruiter for the position.”

While those points may hold weight, it’s worth noting that Kelly’s multiple offensive coordinator interviews this offseason, including with the Las Vegas Raiders, Washington Commanders, and most recently the Seattle Seahawks, speak to his continued relevance and appeal in the coaching world. Additionally, his innovative offensive system would offer a fresh perspective for Ohio State football.

The outcome remains to be seen. Given Ohio State’s esteemed status in college football, Coach Ryan Day should have ample options when it comes to hiring. If Chip Kelly is indeed a contender, the Buckeyes should move swiftly to secure him. However, it’s probable they’ll conduct an interview first if they decide to pursue him.
