New York Jets’ Owner Stresses Need for Reliable Backup Quarterback; Consider Veteran Options

Woody Johnson, owner of the New York Jets, emphasized the necessity of having a competent backup quarterback to support Aaron Rodgers in the 2024 season. One of the potential candidates under consideration is a former No. 1 overall draft pick among four veteran options.

During an interview at Thursday evening’s NFL Honors event in Las Vegas, Woody Johnson made a candid statement that drew attention. The New York Jets’ team owner emphasized the necessity of having a reliable backup quarterback, a position that was notably lacking in the team’s roster last year.

Johnson’s remark may be interpreted as somewhat dismissive of former No. 2 overall draft pick Zach Wilson, who was unexpectedly thrust into the starting quarterback role following Aaron Rodgers’ season-ending injury in Week 1. Despite the initial intention for Wilson to serve as a backup and undergo a “redshirt” season under Rodgers, the 24-year-old struggled to make a significant impact and was eventually benched for the second consecutive year. Wilson’s performance yielded a modest 77.2 quarterback rating, with eight touchdowns and seven interceptions, while the Jets’ passing offense ranked among the lowest in the league.

Regardless of whether Wilson remains on the Jets’ roster for the 2024 season, it appears that the front office is keen on acquiring a seasoned backup quarterback to support the 40-year-old Rodgers, who is recuperating from an Achilles rupture.

With several veteran options available in the free agent market, the Jets may consider the following candidates:

1. Jacoby Brissett:
– A 31-year-old journeyman with 48 career starts and notable passing and rushing statistics.
– Demonstrated effectiveness in limited action with the Washington Commanders last season.

2. Tyrod Taylor:
– A 34-year-old quarterback with extensive NFL experience, including a stint as a starter for the Buffalo Bills.
– Known for his versatility and ability to execute game plans, as evidenced by his performance with the 2023 New York Giants.

3. Jameis Winston:
– A former No. 1 overall draft pick with impressive passing numbers but plagued by interceptions and inconsistency.
– Recorded over 4,000 passing yards in multiple seasons, including a standout year with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2019.

4. Marcus Mariota:
– Despite not achieving franchise quarterback status, the 30-year-old has shown promise as a starter and possesses dual-threat capabilities.
– Enjoyed winning records during his tenure with the Tennessee Titans and has accumulated significant passing and rushing yards over his career.

These veteran quarterbacks could provide valuable depth and experience to the Jets’ quarterback lineup, offering support to Rodgers and bolstering the team’s overall roster strength.
