Michigan’s Coaching Changes: Martindale Joins as Defensive Coordinator, Kanka’s Reaction, and Recruiting Insights

Michigan has witnessed significant coaching changes this off-season, with more shifts occurring as defensive line coach Mike Elston and defensive analyst Dylan Roney, specializing in edge rushers, depart for the NFL.

Nevertheless, new head football coach Sherrone Moore has made a substantial addition to his coaching staff. Sam Webb of The Michigan Insider reported early Friday that Wink Martindale has agreed to become Michigan’s new defensive coordinator.

Martindale, a former defensive coordinator for the New York Giants and the Baltimore Ravens, brings the experienced play-calling Moore sought during his search for a defensive leader.

Bobby Kanka, a four-star defensive lineman from Howell, Michigan, and a long-time Michigan commit, recently reacted to the news of Martindale’s appointment.

“I believe it’s an excellent hire, and he will excel in his role,” Kanka shared with The Michigan Insider.

As part of the 2025 recruiting class for the Wolverines, Kanka is focused on contributing to its success.

“I see it as a strong start to what could be a fantastic class,” Kanka expressed. “My aim is to emulate the unity of the 2024 class. I’ve been in touch with Avery Gach and Kole Briehler the most. My pitch remains consistent: it’s about the perfect blend of faith, family, and football. Why wouldn’t you want to be a part of it?”

Furthermore, Kanka has been diligently improving his skills and physique during the off-season. He reports growth to 6-foot-5 and a weight in the low 280s.
