Expectations for the 2024 NFLSU season, specifically with reference to the projected draft results of LSU players and possible opponents?

The NFL season has concluded, and although the Super Bowl champions featured two LSU Tigers on their roster, this season marked one of the least impressive performances for NFLSU in recent years. Let’s review the final game and the season overall.

Minnesota Vikings v Cincinnati Bengals

In Super Bowl LVIII, the Chiefs triumphed over the 49ers with a score of 25-22 in overtime. While the game provided thrilling entertainment for casual viewers, it was disappointing for LSU fans as neither of the two Tigers on the active roster played significant roles. Clyde Edwards-Helaire received only one carry, which resulted in no gain as he was stopped at the line of scrimmage.

A surprising moment for LSU supporters was the appearance of Neil Farrell, who had seen limited action during the regular season, in the Super Bowl. Despite being primarily inactive, Farrell managed to contribute with one tackle and one pass breakup during the game. This unexpected involvement was a welcomed sight for LSU fans.

Interestingly, despite being part of the championship-winning team last year, Clyde Edwards-Helaire was inactive for the Super Bowl. Nonetheless, witnessing his emotional reaction to the victory was remarkable, as he now boasts championship wins at the high school, collegiate, and professional levels.

The 49ers, who came close to winning on multiple occasions, opted to leave Ty Davis-Price inactive. It’s a common sentiment among fans that they would have likely secured victory if he had played and received carries—an assessment grounded in logic and reason, of course.

Looking ahead, Garrett Nussmeier will make his second career start against the USC Trojans in the next football game held at Allegiant Stadium. Hopefully, the atmosphere will be less tense compared to the recent game.

NFLSU Score: 10/10 (Two Tigers won, fulfilling the primary expectation)

2023 ALL-NFLSU Team

OFFENSE

QB: Joe Burrow (CIN)

RB: Clyde Edwards-Helaire (KC)

WR: Ja’Marr Chase (CIN), Justin Jefferson (MIN), DJ Chark (CAR)

TE: Foster Moreau (NO)

OT: Saahdiq Charles (WAS)

G: Damien Lewis (SEA), Ed Ingram (MIN)

C: Ethan Pocic (CLE), Lloyd Cushenberry III (DEN)

I included two centers instead of tackles due to insufficient playing time for the latter. Brian Kelly, the pressure is on you to turn things around!

DEFENSE

EDGE: Danielle Hunter (MIN), Arden Key (JAX)

INT: Davon Godchaux (NE), Al Woods (NYJ)

LB: Patrick Queen (BAL), Damone Clark (DAL), Devin White (TB)

CB: Derek Stingley Jr. (HOU), Patrick Peterson (PIT)

S: Grant Delpit (CLE), Tyrann Mathieu (NO)

While many players on this list are outstanding, some have faced significant injuries or experienced a decline in performance. Nonetheless, they made the list due to a lack of competition. However, one player notably had his best season yet…

NFLSU MVP: Danielle Hunter

At 29 years old, Hunter had an exceptional season, achieving career highs with 83 tackles, 16.5 sacks, and four forced fumbles. As he enters free agency, he’s poised to secure a well-deserved payday. While Vikings fans may be disappointed about the prospect of his departure, they can find comfort in having the NFLSU MVP for the second consecutive year. Perhaps Ed Ingram or Jay Ward can continue the streak next season!

NFLSU Game of the Year

Week 5: Bengals 34 at Cardinals 20

Traditionally, I select the Game of the Year based on the impact of LSU players. However, this game featured only three Tigers, with BJ Ojulari contributing just two tackles. Despite this, the game stood out due to its explosive nature—a quality that was lacking throughout the season. Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase combined for 200 yards and three touchdowns, creating a thrilling spectacle that surpassed any other game involving LSU players. This excitement is what we all crave.

Looking ahead to 2024, despite the disappointment of the 2023 NFLSU season, there’s a sense of optimism on the horizon.

Three dynamic offensive talents are poised to enter the NFL draft and are projected to be selected in the first round. Additionally, for what could be a historic first, there are expectations of two LSU quarterbacks starting in the NFL—a potential matchup between them next year would be thrilling to witness.

Furthermore, with the Super Bowl scheduled to take place in the Superdome, a venue where LSU Tigers have historically excelled, it’s highly likely that some of them will be competing for championships. Given recent trends, it’s a safe bet to anticipate their presence on the big stage.
