New York Jets Nearing Change in Backup Quarterback as Zach Wilson’s Departure Looms

It appears highly likely that New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers will have a different backup next season. The era of former No. 2 overall pick Zach Wilson in New York seems to be coming to a close after three seasons.

The Jets and Wilson are currently in the process of formalizing their separation.

As reported by ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler, the Jets have allowed Wilson to explore potential trade opportunities, “considering teams that would suit him well. He’s interested in playing under an offensive-minded head coach, a situation he hasn’t experienced in New York.” It remains uncertain whether the Jets have officially granted Wilson permission to actively seek a trade.

Wilson may harbor hopes of finding a suitable match, but it’s improbable that his prospective new team would offer much in return—perhaps only a late-round pick—to acquire him. Yet, one of these “offensive-minded” head coaches might see untapped potential in him, even if it’s merely as a dependable backup.

The momentum for Wilson’s departure from the Jets gained traction during the 2023 season, culminating in early December when the Deseret News reported that Wilson was informed by the Jets, following his benching in November, that he would be traded. This message left Wilson frustrated enough that he hesitated to return as the QB1 weeks later, according to The Athletic. Jets general manager Joe Douglas stated in January that there was a “high probability” the Jets would pursue a veteran backup QB.

“I have a great deal of affection for Zach, and I want what’s best for him. If he wishes to stay here and that’s in his best interest, then naturally, we would welcome another year together,” Rodgers remarked in January. “However, I prioritize Zach’s well-being and his preferred destination. Sometimes, a change of scenery can breathe new life into a player. It’s beneficial to have a fresh start occasionally, but I care deeply for Zach, and our connection will endure regardless of what unfolds.”

In 12 games (11 starts) last season, Wilson recorded a 4-7 record with 2,271 passing yards, eight touchdowns, and seven interceptions, completing 60.1% of his passes. Across his three-season career, Wilson holds a 12-21 record with 23 touchdowns and 25 interceptions.
