Last season, Auburn concluded with a 6-7 record, concluding the campaign with a defeat to the Maryland Terrapins in the Music City Bowl. In Hugh Freeze’s inaugural season at Auburn, his primary focus was on recruiting for the 2024 and 2025 high school classes, resulting in limited involvement in the offensive game plan.

Auburn’s offense struggled to meet expectations in 2023, prompting Coach Freeze to make significant changes to his coaching staff. He expresses confidence in the adjustments made, particularly with the addition of DJ Durkin from Texas A&M as the defensive coordinator and Derrick Nix from Ole Miss as the offensive coordinator.

Regarding Nix, Coach Freeze commented, “It provides a sense of comfort having D Nix and Kent in that role, knowing that the communication and terminology will be clear and familiar. I can contribute effectively when needed. D Nix is not only one of the top recruiters but also one of the finest individuals and football minds I’ve encountered. It’s great to reunite with him.”

Freeze expressed his appreciation for the support he received from John Coen during the hiring process for the new defensive coordinator position. He emphasized the importance of taking the necessary time to make the right decision, considering the high level of interest from candidates he admired.

Freeze was particularly impressed with DJ Durkin during the interview process and valued the contributions he and his wife, Sarah, could bring to the team both professionally and personally. He expressed excitement about having Durkin on board and the wealth of experience he would add to Auburn’s defense.

Despite the challenges, Coach Freeze remains optimistic about the potential of his young roster. FanDuel Sportsbook has projected a preseason win total of 7.5 for the Auburn Tigers, reflecting the team’s potential to succeed in the upcoming season.

Auburn faces a challenging yet navigable schedule, and with proper execution, they could surpass the 7.5-win total, leveraging the abundance of young talent on their roster.
